Annnd we're back with one more recap/ precap before the race season gets underway!
Since the last time of writing, things have been busy! I had a solid altitude camp in October, and was privileged to come straight back to skiing on snow in AK and skiing in town nonetheless. We have had a couple of time trials, a lot of the APU crew has headed overseas to race on the World Cup, I got the world's smallest cold, Thanksgiving has already come and gone, and I leave this weekend to go to Period 1 Super Tour races in Cable WI to kick off the race season.
The time trials were fun and some I was pleasantly surprised with, others, well moose may have gotten in the way and had a more than slight impact on the race which was nonetheless enjoyable. I did end up missing one race because of the cold, and that’s a topic to discuss more in just a moment.
But first the most important thing. I am doing a !!SPECIAL TEAM BUTTS MERCH DROP!! This isn’t your average merch drop. This one means something. It’s heavy, and real and it breaks my heart. This one serves as a fundraiser for The Tim Tebow Foundation to help combat child sexual exploitation. After seeing this movement, it’s weighed heavily on my heart to try to help. So here’s what I’m doing. I have 25 limited edition TEAM Butts cap hats to sell and all of the profit will be given to this foundation. The hats will be sold on a “donation” basis. Meaning they will have a $35 minimum cost but obviously the more you want to pay for the hat, the more you will be giving to this program. Hats will go on sale today, 12/5/24 and will be on sale until 12/31/24 and will be sent out in January. Hats will go out to the first 25 donors so get em quick! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
The direct training/ performance side of being sick that I want to touch on is recognizing symptoms and reacting accordingly. Personally, I have a very easy “tell” when I am starting to get sick. It has taken a while to recognize because I usually don't get sick very often, but after last season, I gained a lot of experience. The cold I had this year had the same funny feeling that I had last year right on the first race of the season. I did race then, and it went poorly and 100% had a BIG impact on how the rest of my season went. The crazy thing is that I never felt that sick but I definitely was, and racing while sick means risking the future. I wrote about it last season that I’d never do that again unless there was something major to race for, and I’m happy to say I stuck to that. Now for the other side of this story we’ll take a look from a different perspective.
This past summer I was in a bad way. I broke, and was just done. Now, thanks to the love and grace of Jesus Christ, who has given me a light in the dark, strength to lean on and truth to rely on, I am renewed, revived and moving forward in His footsteps. So, an interesting thing when you decide to let Jesus in and live with Him at the center, things happen. Among many other things, your outlook changes. It was during this cold that it was clear that he was working in me because for the first time ever I was a little bit excited at the prospect of a “sick day.” Not for being sick, nobody likes that, not even God likes that, but only He can bring good out of it. I was excited because I knew he would make a good thing from it. From a practical point of view, when I got sick I was just looking at the calendar going, ya, it makes sense to take a few days real easy right now to bring the energy levels up really high so that I’m more rested and firing than I would’ve otherwise been during the season. Furthermore, with the amount of racing and travel within close proximity in the next month+, the immune boost will undoubtedly be advantageous.
Writing this, I cannot believe that we are already leaving for the race season, it seems like just yesterday I was trying to get time to stop so I could have time to sort myself out before we got to this point. Despite the less than ideal year of training that I have had, I have no doubt that one way or another this season will be something special.
Stay tuned for links to follow the racing and of course race-recaps.
God bless,
Garrett
